I’m Amelia Cockran. I’m a final year Mech. and Elec. Eng. Apprentice!
’m based in Kent and am coming towards the end of my four-year apprenticeship. I started at CCEP in my current role in September 2018 after finishing my A-Levels in July of the same year. I can’t summarize a typical ‘day in my life’ because no two days are the same in my role and I wouldn’t have it any other way! My responsibilities are to respond to breakdowns, so when the machine stops working, and complete preventative maintenance routines. This is the long and short of my day. I never know what situation I will be walking into when I start my working day, there could be a complete breakdown which I have to respond to, a running line or a system outage when we conduct our planned maintenance and corrective works. My day does vary from being 140ft up a crane in the warehouse to being underneath a machine carrying out regular inspections and maintenance. Everyday I continue to challenge gender stereotypes and encourage women to pursue careers in STEM fields as well as spread the message about apprenticeships.

No two days are the same for me!
What motivates me the most is that I love my job. I’m passionate about what I do and what I want to accomplish and constantly want to challenge myself and be the best Engineering Technician and ensure I absorb as much information that I can. I always want to better myself and my abilities and identify areas of improvement so that I can always be consistent and learn from my mistakes.
Never be afraid to ask a question
Never be afraid to ask a question, no matter how silly it may be. Someone may want to know the answer as well. This goes part-in-parcel with listening, it is easy to hear someone but to listen and absorb the information and if you don’t understand then ask them to explain more. People will respect you more if you are engaging with them and ask for more information if you don’t understand.
It fills me with pride to know that my achievements are recognised
My greatest achievement to date is to have won the Food Manufacturer Excellence Awards – ‘Apprentice of the Year’ and be a finalist for the Food and Drink Federation – ‘Rising Star Award’ and Young Engineer of the Year. It fills me with pride to know that not only my achievements have been recognized within the company but also externally and making it to the finals is a huge accomplishment.
